7 Tips to Keep Kids Reading All Summer

All

1. Let Your Child Choose Their Own Reading Material

One of the best ways to get kids interested in reading is by letting them choose their own books. When children are empowered to choose their own reading material, they develop a positive relationship with reading. They are more likely to find books they enjoy and more likely to read (and finish) books they are excited about.

2. Model Reading

Children take their cues from adults, so it is important to demonstrate your own excitement about books. By reading in front of your children, and talking about the books you enjoy, you model a positive relationship with reading. This helps children see reading as something pleasurable and worthwhile.

3. Read Together

Regardless of age, reading together is socially and educationally beneficial. It provides a fun opportunity for bonding and can open space for important conversations. Try reading aloud to each other, listening to an audiobook together, or starting a family book club.

4. Talk About Books

Have conversations about the books your child is reading. By asking questions, you encourage your child to reflect on what they are reading and develop critical reading skills. This helps them develop their voice and build their confidence, showing them that their perspective matters.

5. Incorporate Reading into Everyday Activities

Language is all around us, providing endless opportunities for children to develop their literacy. Use street signs, grocery lists, recipes, and game instructions as opportunities to build reading and writing skills.

6. Make Reading Part of Your Routine

Make visits to the Book Bank or your local library a part of your regular vacation routine. Our Jane & Finch, Morningside, and Regent Park Book Banks are open six days a week all summer long, offering a cool, screen-free space to relax and read!

7. Join a Summer Reading Program

Summer Reading Programs, like our “Read Around the World” Program, offer fun challenges and rewards to keep your kids motivated! Children can track their reading progress with stickers and win prizes as a reward for their hard work.

Read Around the World, one book at a time, with our free summer program for children and teens ages 3-18. When you sign up at one of our Book Bank locations, your child will receive their very own Summer Reading Passport to track the books they read and record their journey around the globe. As they read, they’ll earn stickers, complete fun challenges, and unlock new travel destinations. Set reading goals, collect rewards, and discover amazing stories from around the world.

A gift to the Book Bank now will help support our extended summer hours and ensure more children have the opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful activities this summer.
