The Children’s Book Bank is recruiting 3-4 new volunteer board directors to join our governance team during an exciting phase of expansion and strategic development.

Who We Are

Since 2008, The Children’s Book Bank (CBB) has provided free books and literacy programs to children across Toronto, improving literacy rates and socioeconomic outcomes.

Our programs are developed and supported by knowledgeable staff, dedicated volunteers, and trusted community partners who work together to make every interaction meaningful, welcoming, and impactful. We also collaborate with neighbouring agencies to provide multifaceted programs.

Whom We’re Looking For

We welcome applicants with a wide range of knowledge and experience, and a commitment to CBB’s mission.

Combinations of the following skills and experiences will be prioritized in 2026:

• Demonstrated commitment to understanding and upholding principles of JAIDE (justice, accessibility, inclusion, diversity, equity).

• Professional finance background, preferably with some experience in non-profit sector.

• Strong governance experience; or a strong interest in governance and a commitment to receiving training.

• Legal professional and/or HR professional.

• Experience in fundraising.

• Experience in corporate social responsibility and/or the philanthropy sector.

• Experience with monitoring risks and making strategic decisions.

• Lived experience and/or leadership experience within CBB’s communities (Regent Park, Jane and Finch, Morningside, Sherbourne).

• Lived experience and/or leadership experience with CBB’s focus area of literacy.

• Located in the Greater Toronto Area.


Board responsibilities and time commitment:

• Director terms are for three years, renewable once.

• Four board meetings are held per year at CBB’s head office in Regent Park, on weekday evenings. In-person attendance is preferred, when possible, but remote/hybrid options are available to help directors accommodate other responsibilities.

• Directors are asked to join one standing committee, which meets four times per year.

• Directors are asked to participate in occasional strategic retreats.

• Board meetings and communications are conducted in English.

• CBB can reimburse directors for reasonable expenses, such as travel to meetings. Please note that the role of the director is voluntary and not otherwise remunerated.

• Orientation and ongoing opportunities for professional development will be provided.

• CBB has Directors and Officers (D&O) liability insurance in place.

• The overall time commitment is approximately 50-60 hours per year, including board meetings, committee meetings, AGM, reading package materials, and emails.

• Interviews over Zoom are planned to be scheduled in May.

• Successful nominees will be elected to the board in either June or September 2026.
