We have an amazing line up of events we are hosting or participating in this summer. Have a look at what we’ll be getting up to at our storefront and in neighbourhoods across Toronto.
Reading Gets Reel: Summer Reading Program
Summer is upon us, and with it comes fun summer programming! Every summer, The Children’s Book Bank provides a free Summer Reading Program for children ages 3-12. In past years, the theme has been based on current events (we hosted the Reading Olympics in 2016, and the Reading Road Trip in honour of Canada 150 last year). This year, we’re having a film-themed Summer Reading Program!
“Reading Gets Reel” will take place from July 3rd to August 31st at the Book Bank. Children can choose from 15 themes and read a book from each theme to receive stickers. At the end of the summer, we will have a “red carpet”-themed party for all of our participants, with cake, activities, and prizes. We will also be having movie nights every Tuesday at 5pm, featuring films based on beloved children’s classics. Kids can read Captain Underpants, then come watch the film to see how the two compare. (Or, they can just watch Captain Underpants because it’s fun!)
Can. You. Read. Festival
A free one-day event promoting literacy and contributing to local food security, Culchahworks aims to help the needy, while also expanding the definition of literacy to include the public’s knowledge and understanding of issues surrounding food security.
This will be the Book Bank’s third time at the festival. We’ll be chatting up the Book Bank at Wychwood Barns on Sunday, August 12, from 12:00 to 6:00 pm. Hope to see you there – tell a friend!
The Children’s Book Bank will be back at the Cabbagetown Festival hosting its 2nd Annual Book Sale as part of the vendors market. The festival runs from Saturday, September 8 to Sunday, September 9 in the heart of Cabbagetown. The Book Bank will be there from 11 am – 7 pm with some fantastic deals on YA and adult books (things you won’t see at the CBB) and all proceeds go toward funding our programming activities.
The Wonder of Storytelling: An evening with Emma Donoghue
We’re delighted to announce that award-winning writer Emma Donoghue will be joining us to talk about storytelling and her highly successful career with author, Charles Foran at Daniels Spectrum Theatre in Regent Park on Thursday, September 20 at 6 pm. Last year’s evening, featuring Yann Martel and Margaret MacMillan, was a sold-out success and we expect to have another sold-out evening this year as well. For tickets click here.
The Word on the Street Festival
The Children’s Book Bank will be at The Word on the Street Toronto Festival at Harbourfront Centre on Sunday, September 23, 2017 from 10 am – 5 pm. This year we’re hosting The Book Bank on the Street – a mini version of what we do here on Berkeley Street. We’ll have shelves set up with some wonderful books, a reading corner (with a few story times) and a checkout table – for families to browse, choose and take home a book of there own for FREE. So be sure to stop by our booth on Kids Street.
International Festival of Authors
We are thrilled to announce that our Book Club has been invited to return to the International Festival of Authors at Harbourfront Centre, again this fall. We are still working on details and can’t wait to share more information with you soon.
