Donating Books & Book Drives
The Children’s Book Bank depends on donations of new and gently-used children’s books from the community to support all of our programming both at our Berkeley Storefront and across Toronto. Schools, workplace and community groups collect thousands of books all year long through book drives to donate to The Children’s Book Bank.
Book donations should be:
- Children’s books for kids aged birth to 12 years old
- In new or gently used condition, meaning no missing covers, torn pages, or pages with colouring/writing on them
- Printed within the last ten years, so a print date of 2007 – present
Books that are unsuitable:
- Adult or YA books or novels
- School, library or text books and encyclopedias
- Books printed more than ten years ago
- Self-published books
- Damaged books
A Great Rule of Thumb
If you would give this book to a child as a gift, then it would be a great book for us!
Books We Need
The Children’s Book Bank is always in need of board books and concept books (ABC, 123, colours, shapes, etc.), as well as books with diverse characters – reflecting the diverse families of Canada, including our First Nations Peoples.
Since the majority of our books are second hand, we don’t always get the latest titles, chapter books or graphic novels. Below are favourites and ‘top sellers’ that go flying off our shelves:
Lego (Ninjago is very popular)
DC & Marvel Superheroes
Geronimo & Thea Stilton
*Especially age appropriate Manga and books by Raina Telgemeier (Smile, Sisters, Drama, Babysitters Club, Ghosts)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Star Wars Origami books
Host a Book Drive
Consider hosting a book drive with your school, at your workplace or as part of a community event. It’s a wonderful way to build goodwill, teamwork and be environmental conscious.
Dropping off Books
Books may be dropped off at our storefront located at 350 Berkeley Street, Toronto, ON, M5A 2X5 anytime during our hours of operation. If possible, please contact us to let us know when you plan to drop off your book donation. Unfortunately because we are a small organization we cannot offer pick up services.
Please do not leave book donations on our doorstep as they may get damaged or stolen.
The Children’s Book Bank endeavors to use all donated books. Donated books that are unsuitable for Book Bank customers are donated to other appropriate organizations, or recycled. You can really help us save time, by following our donation guidelines.
