Inside the Children’s Book Bank
“I like the book bank because it is a peaceful place to… read a book. When I went there I also saw a lot of kids smiling because they got a new book. My cousins were happy because they got books. When they got home they wouldn’t stop smiling.”
“I wish I can go everyday. It’s the most beautiful place and it makes me feel at home”
“As for my children, they see the Book Bank as another home and they want to go every day – it is a part of their life.”
A visit to The Children’s Book Bank is much like a visit to a familiar and well-loved children’s book store except that the books are free of charge. All around the Book Bank you’ll hear laughter and see children with their noses buried in a new favorite book that they will take home and keep.
Children and their caregivers are permitted to take one book per visit and we encourage children to visit us again and again. Some families visit multiple times a week to read stories together and take home books to build their home library and other families come from afar for an occasional visit to this oasis of children’s books. Our knowledgeable volunteers, including many former teachers and librarians, assist the children in selecting appropriate books and read with them.
