The History of the Children’s Book Bank
The Children’s Book Bank was founded by a group of community volunteers in late 2007. With a mission of providing free books and literacy support to children in high needs/low income neighborhoods, the Children’s Book Bank opened its doors in May 2008 in the Regent Park area of Toronto.
Our founding team: Kim Beatty, Jocelyn Barford, Willa Black, Joanne Browne, Jane Crist, Nancy Evans, Janet MacPhail, Kathy Martin, Janet Newlands, Diane Rhind, Nora Spence, Louise Sugar
The Children’s Book Bank gratefully acknowledges the founders of the Bookshare Program for their inspiration and support in helping us to develop a model for the responsible recycling of gently-used children’s books. (The Book Share program was founded in 1997 by Nora Spence and Carol McCabe to encourage the sharing of gently-used children’s books through annual school book drives, where North Toronto schools are paired with inner-city schools).
